This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
The Vigilante’s Bride

Bethany House (August 1, 2010)
by Yvonne Harris

MY REVIEW:

I consistently prowl my agent’s website, The Seymour Agency, for books coming out from fellow clients. I noticed a cover for a new historical from Bethany House and made note to get it if CFBA hosted the book. Sure enough, it was in the queue for August.

Modern girl, Emily McCarthy is heading west to do what many women did in the 1880′s, be a mail order bride to a much older man. But her plans are thwarted when a masked gunman robs the stagecoach she’s on, and then kidnaps her. Luke Sullivan bit off more than he could chew when his brash decision to repay his enemy lands him with a spitfire. Once Emily calms down and is introduced to her “groom” she realizes what horror Luke has saved her from. The longer Emily stays, the more Luke begins to shed the persona of a vigilante. But Luke’s enemies aren’t through with him yet.

What a nice surprise to see a book published that resembles the Louis L’Amour, Elmer Kelton, and Ralph Compton books I cut my western tooth on. I was drawn back to my teens and early 20′s, reading about fist fights and gun battles. (Hear that sigh? <};^D ) It’s so wonderful to find a book that caters both to my western side and my romantic side. A great first novel by a fellow client!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Yvonne Harris earned a BS in Education from the University of Hartford and has taught throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic. Unofficially retired from teaching, she teaches writing at Burlington County College in southern New Jersey, where she resides. She is a winner and three-time finalist for the Golden Heart, once for The Vigilante’s Bride, which is her debut novel.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Montana Territory, 1884…Is Her Kidnapper the Only Man Who Can Keep Her Safe?

Robbing a stagecoach on Christmas Eve and abducting a woman passenger is the last thing Luke Sullivan expected to do. He just wanted to reclaim the money stolen from his pa, but instead ended up rescuing a feisty copper-haired woman who was on her way to marry Sullivan’s dangerous enemy. Emily McCarthy doesn’t take kindly to her so-called rescue. Still, she’s hoping Providence will turn her situation for good, especially when it seems Luke Sullivan may just be the man of her dreams. But Luke has crossed a vicious man, a powerful rancher not used to losing, and Emily is the prize he’s unwilling to sacrifice.

REVIEW:

Another review by my dear friend, who has read all the M.L. Tyndall books I own. I let her have first crack at this one.

What is your destiny?

Marianne Denton and Noah Benin are sure they know theirs. Marianne must take care of her ailing mother and young sister even if it means marriage to Noah, a childhood acquaintance, who she remembered as a “boor and churlish clod”. Noah feels he must prove his worth to his father and make enough money that he won’t have to marry at all, especially to Marianne a “spoiled, silly girl”. Set at the brink of the War of 1812 both will be caught in decisions that will test their fears and faith. How can any good come when they are impressed into the British navy and forced to serve on a British man-of-war?

I was anxious to see how they would get out of the next disaster they were constantly finding themselves in. When a young boy prophesies that good will come in the end, Marianne and Noah must learn to think of each other and overcome their fears to follow God’s plan for their destiny.

I truly enjoyed this author and found the book hard to put down. It is certainly your destiny to read this book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

M. L. (MaryLu) Tyndall grew up on the beaches of South Florida loving the sea and the warm tropics. But despite the beauty around her, she always felt an ache in her soul–a longing for something more.

After college, she married and moved to California where she had two children and settled into a job at a local computer company. Although she had done everything the world expected, she was still miserable. She hated her job and her marriage was falling apart.

Still searching for purpose, adventure and true love, she spent her late twenties and early thirties doing all the things the world told her would make her happy, and after years, her children suffered, her second marriage suffered, and she was still miserable.

One day, she picked up her old Bible, dusted it off, and began to read. Somewhere in the middle, God opened her hardened heart to see that He was real, that He still loved her, and that He had a purpose for her life, if she’d only give her heart to Him completely.

She had written stories her whole life, but never had the confidence to try and get any of them published. But as God began to change her heart, He also showed her that writing had been His wonderful plan for her all along!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

For the sake of her ailing mother, Marianne Denton becomes engaged to Noah Brennin—a merchantman she despises. But as the War of 1812 escalates, Jonah’s ship is captured by the British, and the ill-matched couple learns vital information that could aid America’s cause.

Relive the rich history of the War of 1812 through the eyes of Marianne Denton and Noah Brenin, who both long to please their families but neither one wishes to marry the other. Noah is determined to get his cargo to England before war breaks out, and Marianne is equally determined to have a wedding so that her inheritance can be unlocked and her destitute family saved. When their stubborn games get them captured by a British warship, can they escape and bring liberty to their country—and growing love?

Masquerade Bethany House (August 1, 2010) by

REVIEW:

Every time I look at the cover to this book the song Masquerade from Phantom of the Opera keeps rolling through my head.

For this book, I asked a friend to read and review the book. She jumped on the chance to get a first read of a new book. So, here’s her review of Masquerade, by Nancy Moser.

I enjoyed reading Nancy Moser’s book, Masquerade while on vacation.

I have often wondered what it would be like to switch places with another, to live their life as my own. As is often the case, we learn that it is not as glamorous as we thought. Others have conflicts, tensions, and problems we never imagined.

Masquerade as defined by Webster is “a disguise, false show, or pretense. To live or act under false pretenses”. I felt this was an appropriate title for this story.

The story shows such an opportunity. Charlotte has a chance to leave her sheltered, pampered life for one of adventure and excitement. Dora, her maid, is thus given the opportunity to live the life of the wealthy. This story offers us a glimpse of the life of the wealthy, the servant, the immigrant and the poor working class. It is the people they encounter that make their lives meaningful. Our encounters with others reflect the joys and sorrows of our hearts.

Definitely a fun yet thought provoking and interesting read.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Nancy Moser is the award-winning author of over twenty inspirational novels. Her genres include contemporary stories including John 3:16 and Time Lottery, and historical novels of real women-of-history including Just Jane(Jane Austen) and Washington’s Lady (Martha Washington). Her newest historical novel is Masquerade. Nancy and her husband Mark live in the Midwest. She’s earned a degree in architecture, traveled extensively in Europe, and has performed in numerous theaters, symphonies, and choirs. She gives Sister Circle Seminars around the country, helping women identify their gifts as they celebrate their sisterhood. She is a fan of anything antique—humans included. Find out more at

They risk it all for adventure and romance, but find that love only flourishes in truth…

1886, New York City: Charlotte Gleason, a rich heiress from England, escapes a family crisis by traveling to America in order to marry the even wealthier Conrad Tremaine.

She soon decides that an arranged marriage is not for her and persuades her maid, Dora, to take her place. She wants a chance at “real life,” even if it means giving up financial security. For Charlotte, it’s a risk she’s willing to take. What begins as the whim of a spoiled rich girl wanting adventure becomes a test of survival amid poverty beyond Charlotte’s blackest nightmares.

As for Dora, it’s the chance of a lifetime. She lives a fairy tale complete with gowns, jewels, and lavish mansions–yet is tormented by guilt from the possibility of discovery and the presence of another love that will not die. Is this what her heart truly longs for?

Will their masquerade be discovered? Will one of them have second thoughts? There is no guarantee the switch will work. It’s a risk. It’s the chance of a lifetime.

Where do you run when you know you cannot hide?

Andie Ryborg has nowhere else to go. Her father’s campaign for governor and his aggressive war on drugs has chased her from their family home. Drawn to Miami’s exotic Coconut Grove, Andie hopes to find a quiet refuge where she can discover herself apart from the public eye. But even in that seclusion, even with an officer assigned to protect her, Andie’s privacy has been violated. Someone is watching

Evan Markham’s entire life has been a tug-of-war between what is and what could be. He is drawn to a life that is beyond his reach and emotions have clouded his judgment. Evan knows that earning someone’s trust isn’t easy, especially when he plans to break it. But in the secret corridors of the criminal underworld, he knows what must be done, and he is determined to see it through. Whatever the cost

When enemies close in, a sudden turn of events leaves them both questioning. Where is God in all of this? Who is this enigmatic stranger who offers to help? They both know their lives are in danger. But what about their hearts?

Barbour Books (July 1, 2010)

by Ronie Kendig

MY REVIEW:

As I sit here ready to write this review, in my head swirls a hundred and one thoughts. My husband just announced that he was chosen for a special mission to Afghanistan to do what he loves to do–teach Afghan farmers how to farm in the 21st century. While Ronie Kendig’s book doesn’t deal with this kind of special mission, it’s still a military book at the core. And for me, it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.

Life for military heroes is still in essence combat when they leave service or return home. Civilians struggle to understand, wives struggle to cope with the changes in their husbands, but when it comes to the effects of combat related PTSD we all are at a loss. Because no one but another fellow veteran can understand. Max Jacobs, a former Navy Seal, is teetering on the brink of self-destruction. He has nothing to lose, his wife Sydney has taken the last thing he had left, herself. He’s primed for death, until a chance encounter gives him something to continue on. A group called Nightshade, of the radar and off public knowledge, they do what no one else will do.

Sydney is harboring a secret that drives Max further away from her. But she sense he’s also hiding something from her as well. Ingrained as a reporter, she’s bound and determined to discover what that is and who this special team of men is off saving the world, until it lands her in trouble.

Cut-throat writing, detailed scenes that even the most action junkie man will love, and a deep look at the condition of the human heart when its ripped apart by mental trauma; Nightshade is a perfect blend of all, with a sprinkling of romance. This book isn’t for those who are looking for a sweet romance, there’s enough grit inside these covers to be wary. But this one is for the guys. Ronie’s ability to convey the speech and attitude of military men is spot on, I could see bits of my husband’s mentality in each of the guys. I loved it and it’s a keeper!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ronie has been married since 1990 to a man who can easily be defined in classic terms as a hero. She has four beautiful children. Her eldest daughter is 16 this year, her second daughter will be 13, and her twin boys are 10. After having four children, she finally finished her degree in December 2006. She now has a B.S. in Psychology through Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Getting her degree is a huge triumph for both her and her family–they survived!!

This degree has also given her a fabulous perspective on her characters and how to not only make them deeper, stronger, but to make them realistic and know how they’ll respond to each situation. Her debut novel, Dead Reckoning released March 2010 from Abingdon Press. And her Discarded Heroes series begins in July from Barbour with the first book entitled Nightshade.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

After a tour of duty in a war-torn country, embattled former Navy SEAL Max Jacobs finds himself discarded and alienated from those he loves as he
struggles with war-related PTSD. His wife, Sydney, files a restraining order against him and a petition for divorce. Max is devastated.

Then a mysterious a man appears. He says he’s organizing a group that recycles veterans like Max. It’s a deep-six group known as Nightshade. With
the chance to find purpose in life once again, Max is unable to resist the call of duty and signs on.

With her debut novel The Frontiersman’s Daughter, Laura Frantz pulled us into the history of Kentuke and a frontier that we don’t see many published books touch on. Her sequel, Courting Morrow Little returns us to that time once more. And once again, I wasn’t disappointed.

The book opens on a tragic moment in Morrow Little’s life that sets the tone for her life. Shawnee have destroyed her family and her ability to forgive. Years later she’s returning to her father and her home on the Red River after spending time with her aunt in Philadelphia. While the Revolutionary War rages back east, a war between the white settlers and the Shawnee is coming to a head. In the midst of the trouble Morrow finds herself drawn to a half-blood warrior, Red Shirt. The more time she spends with this man her pa has come to see as a son, the more she learns to let go of her bitterness toward the Shawnee for what they did and forgive. But Morrow’s beauty has put Red Shirt and her father in peril. A violent Major wants her for himself and will go to any lengths to take what he deems his, removing any obstacle in his path.

A wonderfully written book that engages you from the get go. The setting and its history are immersing. An excellent follow up to Laura Frantz’s first novel. If you’re looking for a historical novel during the late 1770′s this should be a book you get. The history is rich and the lives of the next generation of settlers draws you in.

ABOUT BOOK:

Caught between the wilderness and civilization, Morrow Little must find her way to true love.

Morrow Little is haunted by the memory of the day her family was torn apart by raiding Shawnee warriors. Now that she is nearly a grown woman and her father is ailing, she must make difficult choices about the future. Several men–ranging from the undesired to the unthinkable–vie for her attentions, but she finds herself inexplicably drawn to a forbidden love that both terrifies and intrigues her. Can she betray the memory of her lost loved ones–and garner suspicion from her friends–by pursuing a life with him? Or should she seal her own misery by marrying a man she doesn’t love?

This sweeping tale of romance and forgiveness will envelop you as it takes you from a Kentucky fort through the vast wilderness of the West.

ABOUT AUTHOR:

Laura Frantz credits her 100-year-old grandmother as being the catalyst for her fascination with Kentucky history. Frantz’s family followed Daniel Boone into Kentucky in 1792 and settled in Madison County, where her family still resides. Frantz is the author of The Frontiersman’s Daughter and currently lives in the misty woods of Washington state with her husband and two sons.
